The Patriots are kicking the tires on Gottlieb Ayedze, one of the UFL's best offensive tackles, according to reports of a recent workout. This move tells you everything about where Mike Vrabel and Eliot Wolf stand on the offensive line depth chart — and it's not exactly a vote of confidence in what's already on the roster.
Look at the current tackle room: Marcus Bryant, Dametrious Crownover, JonDarius Morgan, Caleb Lomu, Will Campbell, and a bunch of developmental names. None of them are household names. None of them are shutting down NFL pass rushers night in and night out. That's a problem when you're trying to protect a young quarterback and establish a power running game. Ayedze's UFL credentials suggest he can at least compete for snaps at a premium position.
Here's the thing about shopping in the UFL in mid-June — it's smart. The league is producing legitimate NFL-caliber talent, and the talent pool is still somewhat undervalued. Vrabel knows the developmental pipeline. He understands what it takes to find diamonds in less obvious places. If Ayedze passes the Patriots' evaluation, he could slot in as a viable depth piece or even a surprise starter candidate come training camp.
The offseason program may technically be over, but this is the real work. This is where roster construction happens — in the quiet weeks between spring and summer, when most fans aren't paying attention. Vrabel is clearly not satisfied with complacency on the line. Whether Ayedze becomes a solution or simply another camp body, at least the front office is actively searching for ways to improve.
That's the standard now. And that should matter to Patriots fans.
