The Patriots are walking into Thursday's game without their starting cornerback and potentially their entire third cornerback on the depth chart. Carlton Davis III (neck) is out. Karon Prunty and Channing Canada — both reserves — are also unavailable with hamstring injuries. That's three cornerbacks gone, and Mike Vrabel isn't hiding from the problem. This isn't a depth issue anymore. It's a crisis.
But here's where it gets worse: the offensive line is simultaneously falling apart. Alijah Vera-Tucker and Ben Brown, the starting left and right guards, are both sidelined. Vera-Tucker's hamstring injury and Brown's knee injury leave massive holes in the interior. You can't replace two starting guards and maintain any kind of consistent pass protection. Drake Maye needs time in the pocket to operate, and he's not going to get it.
The real story isn't what's missing on the injury report — it's what Vrabel has to actually work with. If Caedan Wallace or Kyle Williams have to step into guard duty, the team is asking for trouble. The Patriots' offense was already operating on thin margins. Now they're down to the marrow.
Defensively, the secondary will need to get creative. Kobe Prentice, Kindle Vildor, and Marcus Jones are going to see heavy rotation. None of them are Davis. That's just the reality. Opposing quarterbacks will absolutely probe this weakness, and Thursday's opponent will have done their homework.
This is what separates good teams from teams that fold when adversity hits. Vrabel has to find a way to win games with the guys available, not the guys on a depth chart. That's his job now.
