The Patriots took their first real breather of camp Wednesday, and it couldn't come at a better time. After four practices in full pads on Thursday, the roster picture is already getting messy. Specifically: there are too many mouths to feed in the receiver room, and nobody's eating enough yet.
A.J. Brown's measured take—\"We'll get going. That's camp progression\"—sounds patient. Maybe it is. But it also reads like someone waiting for the depth chart to sort itself out. That shouldn't be necessary four practices in. Brown is a centerpiece acquisition. He should be commanding the offense, not waiting in line behind a crowded rotation. The Patriots have bodies: Romeo Doubs, Kayshon Boutte (who's already flashing big plays), Mack Hollins, and others fighting for targets. Meanwhile, Drake Maye is still getting his feet wet. That's a recipe for confusion, not cohesion.
Boutte's early production is genuinely encouraging—explosive plays grab attention, and camp reps are finite. But explosive plays also mean targets aren't going elsewhere. If Boutte keeps trending up, do you have a role for Doubs? For Hollins? The receiver position in this offense can't support four legitimate starters eating snaps at equal rates. Something's got to give.
Then there's the Christian Gonzalez contract situation hanging over everything. When your cornerstone corner is in the middle of money talks during the most important development period of the offseason, it's a distraction nobody needs. Vrabel and Wolf signed Gonzalez to handle the outside. That's settled business until it isn't—and right now it kind of is.
The good news: it's late July. Vrabel has time to sort this. Full pads Thursday will start separating the real contributors from the camp bodies. By the time we reach August, the WR room chaos should clarify naturally. Brown will settle in. Boutte will either sustain his play or regress. The pretenders will drift to the bench.
Still: for a team trying to win immediately under a new regime, early camp shouldn't feel this uncertain around your star receiver. The Patriots should be building rhythms, not holding auditions.
