Christian Gonzalez is back. After six practices and two games sidelined, the Patriots All-Pro cornerback logged limited reps Wednesday ahead of the Jets matchup. It's progress. It's also the only good news coming out of the secondary right now.

Because here's the thing: Carlton Davis III and Karon Prunty were both absent from practice. That's your top two corner options outside of Gonzalez, and they're not available. In a division where you're facing Aaron Rodgers and the Jets' passing attack, that's not a luxury problem—that's a liability. Mike Vrabel and the coaching staff are essentially operating with one elite corner at less than full strength and a corner room that's starting to look like a MASH unit.

Gonzalez's return on a limited basis suggests he's tracking toward game availability, which matters. The man's an All-Pro talent when healthy, and you need him in the mix against a vertical passing game. But limited participation isn't the same as full health, and the secondary can't afford another setback. You're asking a banged-up top corner to carry too much weight against one of the better receiving corps in football.

The depth chart behind Gonzalez has to step up, no excuses. Al'zillion Hamilton, Brandon Crossley, Marcellas Dial Jr.—these guys need to be ready. The Jets won't wait for a full healing timeline, and Vrabel knows it. That's why Wednesday's practice participation is everything: it's a measuring stick for how much Gonzalez can actually contribute. If he can give you 70-80 percent effectiveness, you take it and pray the depth holds. If he's still working his way back, you've got a real problem on your hands heading into Sunday.

This is the Jets game that defines where this secondary actually stands.
