The Patriots had the 31st pick. Now they don't. Instead of riding out their slot, Eliot Wolf's front office swung a trade with Buffalo—and the preliminary results suggest this was the right call.

Here's what matters: with offensive tackle depth suddenly becoming scarce across the league, the Patriots made a chess move rather than waiting for their turn. The Bills wanted to move up; the Pats had what Buffalo needed. That's leverage. That's good business. The question now is what they got in return and whether the compensation justified moving out of a first-round position in a draft class where elite pass protection hasn't come cheap.

Look at the current roster. Morgan Moses anchors the left side. Andrew Rupcich, Caedan Wallace, and Thayer Munford Jr. fill out the depth chart. But injuries happen. Depth matters. If the Patriots felt confident enough in their tackle room—or felt they could address the position later in the draft—then trading down makes sense, especially if they walked away with additional picks or a prospect who fills a different hole. Mike Vrabel's system demands smart, versatile linemen. Adding picks means more chances to find them.

The tricky part: we're still in the early assessment phase. The real evaluation comes in September. Did Wolf use the additional assets wisely? Did the compensation feel fair given the market? Those answers matter more than the move itself. A trade up feels genius only if the player helps you win. Same logic applies here in reverse.

What we know is that Wolf and Vrabel weren't passive. They identified an opportunity with a division rival and capitalized on it. That's the kind of aggressive front-office thinking that has to become a habit in New England if this rebuild is going to accelerate. The Patriots have young talent at quarterback with Drake Maye and a defense starting to take shape. They need to be hunters, not bystanders, in these high-leverage moments.

The Bills got what they wanted. Now we find out if the Patriots got better.
