The Patriots are heading into Week 2 against Pittsburgh shorthanded in the secondary, and it's creating an unexpected opportunity for fifth-round rookie Karon Prunty. Carlton Davis III's neck injury opens the door for a young cornerback to prove he belongs in the NFL — a make-or-break moment against a Steelers offense that will test whether he's ready.

This isn't ideal timing. Pittsburgh's passing attack demands a cornerback who can play press coverage and stick with receivers in the vertical game. Prunty hasn't gotten significant snaps yet this season, which means he'll be learning on the job against one of the AFC's more established quarterback rooms. That's a lot to ask of a fifth-rounder in Week 2.

On the other side of the ball, the Patriots are getting creative with their receiver situation after A.J. Brown's ankle sprain knocked him onto temporary injured reserve. Bringing Efton Chism III into the game day mix is a calculated move — Chism gives the offense another body in the passing attack, even if he's been buried on the depth chart this offseason. With Romeo Doubs and DeMario Douglas likely to carry the load at receiver, Chism represents depth insurance more than a featured role.

What matters here is that Mike Vrabel's offense can't afford to completely stall just because Brown is out for a week or two. The Steelers' defense isn't forgiving, and the Patriots need to maintain some semblance of vertical threat downfield. Chism's activation suggests confidence that he can at least move the chains and keep Pittsburgh honest.

The bigger concern is secondary depth. If Davis misses extended time, the Patriots might be forced to lean heavily on Prunty sooner than the organization planned. That accelerates the timeline for a young cornerback who was probably earmarked for a developmental season. Sometimes injuries demand that you grow up fast. For Prunty, Week 2 might be exactly when that happens.
