A.J. Brown looked nothing like himself in his return from injured reserve against the Jets last Sunday. Ten targets, three catches, 27 yards. There were drops on critical downs—a third-down slant, a deep shot down the sideline. The stat line screams rust or concern or both. Yet here's the thing: Patriots fans aren't panicking, according to a new survey, and honestly, that's the right call.
This isn't complacency. It's perspective. Brown owns the performance and acknowledged the sloppiness, which matters. One game back from injury, especially after time on the shelf, doesn't define a player's trajectory or Mike Vrabel's investment in him. The weapons are there—Hunter Henry, DeMario Douglas, Kayshon Boutte in the mix. The passing game doesn't hinge on Brown's first week looking crisp.
What matters more: Is the injury actually healed? Can Tommy DeVito, Behren Morton, Joshua Dobbs, or Drake Maye get Brown into rhythm over the next few weeks? The early incompletions could be timing issues between quarterback and receiver, not a sign of diminished ability. Brown's track record says he'll shake off the cobwebs. One target-heavy, catch-light performance doesn't erase that.
The real test comes now—consistency over the next month. If we're seeing the same 3-for-10 line in Week 9, 10, 11, then we talk about deeper problems. Scheme fit, health concerns, the works. Right now though, the fanbase reading this correctly: patience. You don't survive in the NFL by overreacting to rusty debuts. Brown will either prove ready or he won't, and we'll know a lot more in two weeks than we do today.
